With the increasing number of data breaches and identity thefts in recent times, consumers are resorting to temp emails as an effective means to safeguard their privacy and data. While it can act as a magic bullet for the end user, temp emails are notorious for thwarting the marketing efforts of a business.
What are temp emails?
Temp emails or disposable emails allows one to receive emails at a temporary address instead of one’s primary email address. This helps avoid spam and ensure security. These throwaway emails become inactive after a specified period of time that typically ranges between 10 minutes and an hour.
How temp emails adversely affect your database
While temp emails work great for the end user, they spell disaster for a business that has them in its customer database. Below are the two main issues you must pay attention to:
1. Fake users in your subscriber list
Since there is technically no limit to the number of disposable emails a user can create, a business can never know the number of actual subscribers in their lists. This not only costs your business in terms of time and money spent on sending emails to disposable addresses, but can also mess up your email list analytics and impede your marketing efforts to reach out to genuine leads.
2. Hard bounces in your email campaign
A bounced email is never a good thing, we are all aware of that. Hard bounces? Even worse. Hard bounces are permanent delivery failures due to reasons like fake email addresses, fake domains etc. Do you know that your sender reputation will be at stake if you shoot email campaigns to disposable email addresses? Email sender reputation is a score assigned by an Internet Service Provider to any outgoing mail server. The kind of content you deliver, the number of times your emails are labeled or flagged as spam, subscriber engagement and bounce rate are crucial metrics that decide your reputation as a sender. It is thus imperative that you clean up temp emails from your database to improve your email deliverability and sender reputation score.
How Arengu can help fix temp email issues
Although it is not easy to combat temp email issues, Arengu’s workflow editor has a great fix for problems like the ones mentioned above. Let’s take you through it step by step.
Log in to your Arengu account and select the Flows option on the left hand side of your dashboard. Click on Create a Flow button on the top right corner or just hit the Plus sign that will ask you to select a flow type.
The two flow types are explained in detail, so feel free to choose your preferred type. For this use case, we have selected the Asynchronous flow. You are now taken inside the workflow editor that is equipped with all important functions and features.
Click on Triggers and check the first box that says Submits a form. Next, choose one or more forms from the dropdown menu below the checkbox. Hit the green Save button at the bottom and proceed to make a selection from the list of actions by clicking on the small plus icon underneath Triggers.
Select Verify email address and click on it to change the verification rules that appear in the setup panel. Now, check the box Block disposable email addresses to filter out all temp emails. It’s really that easy.
1.Whitelist domains: Lets you type in a domain name which you want to whitelist (emails received from whitelisted addresses are always classified as ‘not spam’).
2.Blacklist domains: Lets you type in a domain name which you want to blacklist (emails received from blacklisted addresses are blocked and classified as ‘spam’).
3.Continue flow execution after an error: Allows the user to check the box if they want the flow to be executed post an error or uncheck the box if they want the flow execution to be discontinued.
So that’s all you need to know to avoid disposable emails from making it to your customer database and email lists. You may check out this guide to learn more about how to create a powerful custom form with Arengu.
